Subject: CVEN 345/221 Class Friday/ Ring Day
Dr. Lowery,
I am in your class. One of my life long friends is getting his ring Friday in the middle of lecture. I would love if I was able to be there for him during this big moment of his life. I was wondering if it would be okay if I missed lecture? I can give my homework to a friend to turn in for me and I can stay caught up by the notes and videos you post online.
Thank you for your time.
Joe
Joe:
If it is a university excused absence then I say alright. But sorry, even then it is never “OK” to miss class. Because if you then make a B instead of an A, you will come back and say that I told you it was OK to miss that class, and Quiz B had three problems on it that were covered during that class. So, watch our videos to see what we did those days.
Will I happen to call on you that day? Probably not.
Will I give a pop quiz that day and you will miss it? Probably not, but who knows? Depending on why you missed, even if it wasn’t strictly university excused, you might talk me into a make-up.
Will it drop your grade a letter? Probably not, as long as you watch the videos for that class.
But is it OK? No, not really.

Subject: Class Absence Memo
Sir,
Due to an Army ROTC related event I will be missing your classes this week. Please find attached a university approved memo for these absences.
Regarding the material of these classes, I will watch the online video and catch up on the material on my own time. Please let me know if the memo is not adequate, and/or if there is anything I can do to compensate for these absences.
Respectfully,
Josephine:
Josephine:
That’s all you need. Simply hand in your “late” homework and write on them “excused due to …” and have me initial them after class, so no problem there. You will miss a weekly quiz which you will be permitted to make up later in the semester, so no problem there. Watching the Beason videos (if available for your class) and our in-class/lab videos, you will be able to see what you missed, so no problem there.
So, no problem.

Howdy Dr. Lowery,
I understand it is 20 min before class and this is ridiculously late ….but I just wanted to let you know that I will not be attending today because of a job interview. See you next week.

Thanks,

FTAB Class of 20′
Josephine:
20 minutes is fine since I am so far behind that I probably won’t read it for a week.
Job interviews are considered excused absences in my classes. See syllabus if this impacted the time you handed in your homework.
