Problem: 5-13

Posted on July 27, 2021 by Abigail Stason

Given: A design calls for 520 cu.yds. of type X granular material for use as a sub-base for a roadway, and 70 cu.yds. of type E material for use as a base underlay for sidewalks along the roadway. Three gravel beds are available to draw from. Two of these have very low supply due to a busy summer and the third has a limited draw because it is already being tapped by an ongoing project. The availability and cost for each of the sources is as follows:

  • Pit A has available: 250 cu.yds. of type X @ $ 6.80/cu.yd, and 25 cu.yds. of type E @ $15.75/cu.yd.
  • Pit B has available: 250 cu.yds. of type X @ $ 7.00/cu.yd, and 35 cu.yds. of type E @ $16.50/cu.yd.
  • Pit C has available: 400 cu.yds. of type X @ $ 7.50/cu.yd, and 25 cu.yds. of type E @ $16.00/cu.yd.

You already are committed by contract to buy at least $1500 worth of material from Pit A, and you have a second contract that requires you to buy at least 100 cu yd of something (your choice) from Pit B.

Required: Determine the minimum cost of meeting these requirements.
