Solve for the maximum vertical reaction on one of the center footings of an eight story tall, 5 bay building.  Use steel W12x53’s for all members.  Columns are all 35 feet apart, and all stories are 20 feet high.  Loads are to be 2 k/ft uniform loading placed on those beams which will cause the maximum reaction on one of the two center footings. 

Determine which beams to load by making MASTAN give you the influence line for the reaction sought, and solve for that reaction.

Set up and solve Example Problem 15.8 on text page 619 using MASTAN2.  NOTE! Solve EXAMPLE problem number 15.8 on page 619/620, not Problem 15.8! 

Create a report with your answers listed. Use an Area = 20 in² for all members.  Your answers should reasonably agree with those in the book.  They are influenced by your use of area =20 in^2. 

If you use A = infinite, you get the Kassimali textbook answers, since the slope deflection method neglects axial deformations.  If you use A = 0, the MASTAN answers are quite different since MASTAN thinks the members have no axial stiffness at all.

Example problems:

Right click to download example problem MASTAN data files.  The files had to be renamed from (for example) Cantilever.mat to Cantilever.mat.txt to get through the University firewall.  After downloading, you must then delete the “txt”.  Also, you cannot double click on the .mat file to run it, because Matlab will try and run it.  You must use MASTAN2 to open the file from wherever you save it.

Cantilever.mat.txt  = Cantilever.mat.  Analysis of a 30 foot long W12x50 steel cantilever beam with 2 k/ft applied as a gravity load over the right half of the beam.  You can also see page by page screen shots taken during entering the data, including errors made along the way, by clicking here.

 

For those of you having problems running MASTAN on Windows 10, Mr. Williams got it running:

1. Download MASTAN2 from this site ->  http://www.mastan2.com/download.html
2. Download version 1 if you have MATLAB
3. The name of the downloaded file is amsa2v355matlab
4. Extract that zipped file to a directory of your choice
5. Follow Setup Guide

Which means that you must properly set the current directory or path, to point to the folder where you saved the unzipped files.

Because in 15.6 page 612. the joint deflections were known, and hence added no new unknowns to the problem, whereas in 15.12 page 639, the joint deflections were UNKNOWN, thereby adding 2 more unknowns to our set of equations, requiring the addition of 2 more equations of statics to the solution.

On problem 7.23 he wants you to use volume integrals to solve for Delta B for Figure P7.21.

This is somewhat confusing, until you look carefully for Figure 7.20 and 7.21 and notice that they are two different figures.  One is uniformly loaded, and one is loaded with a concentrated moment at the end of the cantilever beam.

Thus on problem 7.22 he wants you to use volume integrals to solve for Delta B for Figure P7.20.

On problem 7.23 he wants you to use volume integrals to solve for Delta B for Figure P7.21.

Theory of Structures. (3-0). Credit 3. Structural engineering—functions of structures, design loads, reactions and force systems; analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate structures including beams, trusses and arches; energy methods of determining deflections of structures; influence lines and criteria for moving loads; analysis of statically indeterminate structures including continuous beams and frames. Prerequisites: CVEN 302 or registration therein; CVEN 305.

Course Objectives:

• To introduce students to the general behavior of statically determinate and indeterminate structures and determination of forces therein. Construction of influence lines.  Determination of load and load placement on structures.  Use of available computer programs for analyzing statically indeterminate structures.
